Broccoli for breakfast

This isn’t nutritional advice, but it is advice for how to nourish yourself into a good day with morning habits.

For a long time, I’ve thought one of the best things you can do is start each day with some sort of plain, green vegetable. Over the past few years, I have had a few amazing breakfasts that were my go-to.

  1. Avocado smoothie. 1 avocado, cocoa powder, dash vanilla, unsweetened alt milk (almond, coconut, rice, hemp, whatever you want)
  2. Steamed kale w a teaspoon of olive oil and a dash of salt
  3. Steamed broccoli w a teaspoon of olive oil and a dash of salt
  4. Greens powder in water with olive oil…why don’t I put some salt in this one too? I will try and report back.

These are a few of the go-to breakfasts I have had over the years. I think I have also done celery and almond butter as well as green apple and almond butter for snacks.

There is something about getting up, crushing a simple breakfast with a lot of phytonutrients, and then getting to your day. Something about it makes me really happy with my day before much has happened at all. In the past, I’ve practiced yoga in the morning, woken up to meditate, taken walks, cold showers, you name it. But breakfast is always lingering around the corner and a good one will help you build on whatever you’ve done so far.

The point of broccoli for breakfast, beyond the dietary habit, is that if you’re not ready to have your broccoli for breakfast in many forms, you may not be doing everything you can to achieve the thing that you want to achieve. When I started eating broccoli for breakfast, I wanted something fast, easy, repeatable, and healthy. I loved being able to get some broccoli or kale at the grocery and know exactly what I was going to have for the next 5 days. It saved me money too because I didn’t get ridiculously hungry at 10 am and buy something as a rescue snack. I could plan for and budget for that green breakfast. Just like the time it takes to implement other healthy habits, you have to budget for them in your life. One of the best things you can do if you’re able is go out for a walk early in the morning. Just a short stroll, 10 or 15 minutes later you may feel quite different about the day ahead.

Use broccoli for breakfast as a metaphor for creating healthy patterns and habits and see how it helps you change.

Feed your mind broccoli for breakfast.

Feed your soul broccoli for breakfast.

Feed your spiritual self an avocado smoothie.

And always remember to give yourself a deep indulgence once in a while.

I prefer the banana split.
